Foot pain can be debilitating, affecting your ability to walk, run, and participate in daily activities.  Here at Balgowlah Sports Injury & Physiotherapy, we have over 30 years of experience treating all sorts of foot pain. Treatments for Aching feet

There are a variety of treatments available for foot pain, depending on the underlying cause. Some common treatments include:

  • Rest: Resting the foot can help to reduce inflammation and pain.
  • Ice: Applying ice to the affected area for 15-20 minutes at a time, several times a day, can help to reduce pain and swelling.
  • Over-the-counter pain medication: Over-the-counter pain medication, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help to relieve pain.
  • Physical therapy: Physical therapy can help to strengthen the muscles and improve flexibility in the foot and ankle. This can help to prevent future injuries and improve balance.
  • Orthotics are shoe inserts that can help to improve foot function and reduce pain. Shoe inserts can be custom-made or purchased over the counter.

Ankle Sprains

Treating Common Foot Conditions

  • Ankle Sprains: A sprained ankle requires specific management throughout the healing process. This includes reducing pain and swelling, restoring movement, building strength and balance, and gradually returning to your sport or activities. Contrary to popular belief, keeping your ankle wrapped up for too long can actually hinder your recovery. We use a special taping technique that protects your ankle without restricting movement.

  • Stress Reactions and Fractures: These overuse injuries are caused by repetitive stress on the bones. Treatment often involves reducing activity and allowing the bone to heal. Physical therapy exercises can also help strengthen the surrounding muscles and improve balance to prevent future injuries.

How Orthotics Can Help

Orthotics are shoe inserts that can be a valuable tool for managing many types of sore feet. They work by redirecting forces away from painful areas of your foot and ankle during activities like walking, running, and jumping.

There are three main types of orthotics:

  • Off-the-Shelf Orthotics: These generic insoles are readily available at pharmacies, but they may not provide long-lasting relief or address specific foot problems.

  • Heat-Molded Orthotics:  These Shoe inserts are customized to your feet during an appointment.  A podiatrist will assess your feet and then mold the orthotics to provide targeted support and pain relief. Heat-molded foot Arch supports typically last 18-24 months.

  • Casted Orthotics:  These custom-made Shoe inserts are ideal for complex foot shapes or severe Aching feet.  A cast is made of your foot, which is then used to create a rigid orthotic that can last for many years.

Did you know that orthotics can help with back pain? If you have one leg that is slightly longer than the other, it can cause pain in your back and other parts of your body.  We can use special techniques to realign your legs and create foot Arch supports to even out any leg length discrepancies. In many cases, this can resolve back pain.

What If You Already Have Orthotics?

Perfect, bring them in when you have your session, and we will analyse then and make any corrections needed on the spot! This may save you having to get another pair.
